District 215 is committed to assuring that all students have the resources that they need to succeed. This page is dedicated to providing information regarding identification, placement, and assessment of English Learners (ELs). District 215 follows the Board of Education's policy on English Learners, which can be found in Section 6:160 of the District Policy Manual.
Overview
All students new to District 215 are required to complete a Home Language Survey. The state of Illinois requires that any student who, according to the Home Language Survey, speaks a language other than English or lives in a home where a language other than English is spoken be given an English language screening assessment (WIDA Screener for grades 9-12). The purpose of the assessment is to determine if the student qualifies for the English Learner (EL) supports. Students are then continually evaluated for placement through annual testing called ACCESS. ACCESS Testing Window 2022: Coming soon

Step 1 Identification through Home Language Survey
Home Language Survey
Refers to the survey for incoming students that asks“Is there a language other than English spoken in your home?”. If the answer is "Yes" then students are required to be screened with WIDA (more info below). At District 215, the Home Language Survey is included in the mandatory online registration portion of registration.

Step 2. WIDA Screening and Placement
WIDA Screening
WIDA is a language screening assessment that required for students who, according to their Home Language Survey, speak more than one language. WIDA tests students in Speaking, Reading, Writing, and Listening. Students identified as ELs must be placed in EL services immediately. Within 30 days after placement in program at the beginning of school or 14 days in the middle of the school year, parents/guardians must be notified of placement. The notification describes the program placement and refusal option to parents.

Evaluación WIDA
WIDA es una evaluación del lenguaje que es requerida para los estudiantes que, de acuerdo con su Encuesta de Idioma del Hogar, hablan más de un idioma. Step 3. Access Testing and Scoring
What is Access Testing?
A state-mandated assessment given to EL students each year to monitor student progress towards meeting the ISBE EL program exit criteria of a minimum of 4.8 composite. The testing measures speaking, listening, reading, and writing abilities.

Que son las Pruebas ACCESS?

EL Course Info
Transitional Bilingual Education (TBE) is required by the state of Illinois when there are 20 or more ELs from the same language background in school. All TBE classes in District 215 are taught by EL certified staff.

Math (bilingual Spanish)- Algebra TBE, rotation of geometry or Alge ll TBE
Science- Biology TBE and Chemistry in the Community TBE-North EL- South (bilingual Spanish)
Social Studies- World History, US History, Gov/Econ-TBE
District 215 also offers Heritage Spanish l and Heritage Spanish ll for native Spanish speakers.
